uses it to mean darling, quaint I'm wondering if that is the sense of the golem's repeated "my precious" [referring to the Ring] in The Lord of the Rings.

In Southern England too it means darling, quaint, as in the Wodehousian Too too precious, my dear!.

Ach, der golem, precioussss... Tolkien's text implies that Gollum's 'precious' is addressed both to himself and the Ring - a warped love, rather than quaint.
